Six Athens police officers, along with an unspecified number of detainees, were placed into quarantine for two weeks after one of the incarcerated men tested positive for the coronavirus on Thursday.
The Albanian detainee had been at the Omonoia Square police station awaiting deportation to his home country at the time, according to Greek press reports.
After reporting he did not feel well this morning, the inmate was transported by the authorities to Athens’ Sotiria Hospital, where it was confirmed that he was indeed suffering from Covid-19.
Police authorities are now disinfecting the entire premises of the police station at Omonoia as a precaution to prevent the further spread of the disease. Since the inmate had been detained first in the Exarcheia precinct, that police station also must undergo a thorough disinfection.
According to Greek press reports, the man had been transferred to the Omonoia station yesterday because of overcrowding at the Exarcheia station.
A total of four officers from the Omonoia station as well as two others from Exarcheia will be undergoing coronavirus testing today as a result of their possible exposure to the virus.
