Greece’s Foreign Ministry on Friday spoke out very strongly against Turkey’s decision to turn the Byzantine monastery of Chora into a mosque, saying it was “another provocation against religious people everywhere in the world and of the international community that respects the monuments of the human civilization.”
The Ministry’s announcement stated “After Hagia Sophia, and despite the international reaction, the character of another monument of UNESCO’s cultural heritage is now brutally insulted within Turkish territory.”
The statement went on to say “today’s decision of the Turkish authorities exposes Turkey again to the international community. It is totally condemnable.”
The Greek Foreign Ministry concluded the statement by saying that it “called on Turkey to return to the 21st century of mutual respect, dialogue and understanding between civilizations.”
