The mayor of Santorini has announced that the island authorities are handing out free masks to all tourists in order to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
Greece has seen an alarming rise in Covid-19 infections as Greek and visiting holiday makers have relaxed precautions and there are phenomena of overcrowding on most islands.
“We bought 30,000 masks, and today we handed out 500 for free to tourists as they were getting off ferries at the port,” Santorini Mayor Antonios Sigalas told AFP.
Greek authorities have enforced strict measures, even lockdown, on certain islands where overcrowding was common. Santorini is not one of them, even though it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Greece.
Masks are mandatory in all indoor spaces in Greece except restaurants, coffee shops and clubs. The Santorini mayor said he hopes that going away free masks would encourage tourists to wear them in all places where there are many people close to each other.
Siglas also said that police would crowd control in all places of the island where many people gather.
