It was a magical night for Greek football on Tuesday in Thessaloniki as PAOK eliminated Turkish Besiktas in the UEFA Champions League’s second qualifying round with an easy 3-1.
In the first 30 minutes PAOK took the lead with 3-0 and kept control of the game for the remaining 60, not allowing the Istanbul-based team to threaten its defense.
Two goals by Christos Tzolis (7′, 24′) and one by Dimitris Pelkas (30′) sealed the victory for the Thessaloniki team over the Turkish side at Toumba stadium.
Cyle Larin scored the Turkish team’s only goal (37′) before the first half expired was the lone scorer for the away team. PAOK’s Chuba Akpom also missed a penalty kick (41′) at the end of the first half.
With Tuesday’s win, PAOK advances to the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round as all second qualifying round games are played as single-leg ties due to the anti-coronavirus measures.
Regardless of what happens in the next two rounds for PAOK, with the victory over Besiktas the Thessaloniki club has clinched a place in the Europa League group stage.
