A young sergeant in Greece’s Special Forces was fatally injured during a nighttime free-fall exercise out of a helicopter late Thursday night.
Strong winds are thought to have violently pulled the paratrooper outside of the exercise’s designated airdrop zone, causing his death.
When fellow soldiers witnessed the tragic accident, they rushed to locate the soldier, who was a member of the Greek Special Forces.
Greek officials have urged for a full investigation into the cause of the sergeant’s tragic death.
Throughout the country, politicians, public figures, and citizens have expressed their shock at the event and offered condolences to the paratrooper’s family.
On Friday, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed his deep sadness at the event and commitment to supporting the victim’s family. His statement reads in part:
“The Armed Forces, along with all Greeks, mourn the young man who lost his life in the line of duty, the sergeant of our paratroopers, who was fatally injured during a demanding exercise. Our thoughts are with the family of the sergeant, who passed away with the Greek coat of arms on his chest. The state will be by his family’s side.”
