Health authorities in northern Greece are on alert after almost 200 cases of coronavirus were detected among employees of a factory in Giannitsa, in the region of Pella.
According to a report on star.gr, the known cases have reached 191 in the last few days, among a total of 680 employees.
The factory suspended its operation until September 18, while the prefectures of Pella, Pieria, Imathia and Kilkis were placed in a regime of special restrictive measures, in order to avoid the further spread of the virus.
Health authorities express fears that the factory workers may have unknowingly spread the virus to many more people, as they were traveling in large groups by bus from villages and small towns nearby.
Speaking on MEGA TV, the mayor of Pella, Grigoris Stamkos, expressed his concern about the high number of cases.
“People observed the restrictive measures. However, for some reason the cases multiplied. We have to limit the spread,” he noted.
He also revealed that four primary school teachers have also been tested positive.
The measures imposed on the four prefectures include:

  • The use of a mask is mandatory both indoors and outdoors.
  • Suspension of any kind of event such as parties, trade fairs, religious processions and open markets.
  • Prohibition of gatherings over 9 people, both in public and in homes.

These measures are valid until Friday 25/09/2020 at 06.00.
