Greek authorities announced the arrests of five young migrants in relation to the series of fires that razed the refugee camp Moria to the ground last week.
Another man has been identified and authorities are in the process of locating him.
The five men are accused of intentionally setting fires in the camp, which left tens of thousands of refugees and migrants without places to sleep.
A temporary camp on the island of Lesvos has already been built, by the Greek Army, and hundreds of migrants have already been housed there. They all went through Covid testing prior to resettling there.
Any migrant who desires to leave the island for any reason will have to pass through this camp, according to a new announcement by Citizens’ Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis.
Images of people sleeping along main roads and in cemeteries shocked the world, and brought attention to the current refugee crisis in Greece and Europe.
After the destruction of Moria, Europe’s largest migrant camp, many European nations have pledged to support Greece either financially or by taking in refugees themselves.
Many in Greece and internationally have been calling for such action since the start of the refugee crisis in 2015.
According to Greek news outlets, two of the alleged arsonists are underage, from Afganistan, and they were moved to shelters on the Greek mainland soon after the fires, along with other unaccompanied minor refugees.
Notis Mitarakis, Minister of Immigration and Asylum, declared in a tweet Tuesday that the suspected arsonists will be promptly tested for Covid-19 to ensure everyone’s safety.
