Nestled in the Argo Saronic Gulf, just under two hours away from Athens by ferry, Hydra has long been a destination for artists, musicians, and free spirits inspired by its stunning natural beauty and vibrant port town.

Internationally known as the muse and longtime home of poet and songwriter Leonard Cohen, Hydra is imbued with a spirit of creativity and beauty that can be felt just by exploring the breathtaking island.

In a unique twist, Hydra is also completely free of cars, motorcycles — and even bicycles — so visitors get around by simply walking, riding the many donkeys of the island, or taking water taxis to reach far-away beaches.

Wandering through Hydra’s lovely main town, visitors encounter stunning neoclassical homes, fascinating museums, and picturesque scenes of idyllic life on a Greek island. Following walking paths that branch out from the town, visitors can reach historic monasteries perched on ciffs, with panoramic views of the island and the town below.

Many impressive beaches with crystalline blue waters are accessible by foot from the main town. Avlaki, Mandraki, and Kamini are within walking distance from Hydra’s port for those who want to stay near town.

If you’re seeking solitude and serenity, you can take water taxis from the port to more secluded beaches, like Agios Nikolaos, Molos, and Kaoumithi.

Bisti, Agioas Nikolaos, Mandraki and Kamini are all organized beaches, so there are sunbeds and umbrellas available, as well as beach bars for refreshments. If you decide to go to a beach that isn’t organized, be sure to bring water and snacks with you!

There are also tavernas in Hydra’s port, or along the walking path to Avlaki and Kamini, which serve traditional Greek food if you get hungry after a day of swimming. And you certainly will.

Hydra’s sun-soaked beaches make it a great destination for summer trips, but its natural beauty and cosmopolitan town, filled with artisans’ shops, museums, and boutiques, make it the perfect spot for a short trip throughout the year.

Although Hydra is close enough to Athens to be a fun day trip, staying overnight allows you to experience the magic of the island without missing out on anything it has to offer.
