Tragically, the 43-year-old woman who was missing after the disastrous flooding brought by the storm Ianos destroyed parts of Karditsa, has now been found dead.
She was discovered 7-9 km (4.3 – 5.6 miles) from where her empty car had been found on Friday evening, in the river Pamissa, near a bridge in the town of Mouzaki, which was particularly hard-hit by the storm.
The woman, who had been a pharmacist, was apparently dragged out of her car by the torrents of water as she was returning home from her pharmacy.
The “Medicane” called Ianos claimed the lives of two other people in the same region when it battered Greece from Thursday through Sunday.
The unusual storm caused widespread damage to roads, buildings and infrastructure throughout Greece, especially in the Ionian islands and Thessaly.
In Mouzaki, near Karditsa in Thessaly, roads were completely flooded by muddy, rushing water, and buildings collapsed as a result of the extreme weather conditions.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the region, promising swift aid to residents and business owners whose lives had been upended by the catastrophic storm.
The government also announced that farmers and other residents who had been severely affected by the storm would also receive financial aid.
