The United Nations Security Council on Friday called on Turkey to stop unilateral actions in the Eastern Mediterranean and revoke the decision to open the Varosha coastal town in the occupied part of Cyprus.
In a statement issued by all members and read by Council President Vassily Nebenzia, the House reaffirmed Resolutions 550 (1984) and 789 (1992) on the status of Varosha and expressed concern over Ankara’s increase of tensions on the island.
Since 1984 Turkey has been asked by the UN to send away the town’s occupying forces so that the 39,000 or so residents who were expelled after the 1974 Turkish invasion can return home. The Security Council emphasized the importance of full respect for and implementation of its resolutions.
“The Cypriot government welcomes the presidential statement approved by the Security Council, as a result of our appeal regarding the opening by the occupying forces of the fenced area of Varoshfa in Cyprus,” said Cypriot ambassador to the United Nations, Andreas Mavrogiannis.

Specifically, the Turkish NAVTEX with effect from Saturday October 10 until November 9 concerns investigations of Barbaros, west of Paphos and within sections 6 and 7 of Cyprus’ EEZ.
