Greece’s Minister of Culture and Sports Lina Mendoni said that without theater and cinema “we will all be taken to the psychiatrist,” explaining the reasons behind the policies the government will implement to protect the performing arts in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.
Speaking on Mega television on Sunday, the Greek official said that the culture sector has faced particularly serious problems due to the coronavirus pandemic. Theaters and cinemas continue to be closed, while all live music performances have been suspended and those venues remain closed as well.
Mendoni argued that without cinema and theater this winter would be difficult for all citizens. “If we do not have the opportunity to escape with the help of performing arts, we will all be taken to a psychiatrist,” she stated, adding that there will be new measures announced on Monday allowing people to be able to access and watch performances and shows.
The Minister of Culture pointed out that a campaign will be created by the government which is meant to convince people that live performances are once again safe.
Among the measures to be announced are doing away with limits on the number of people in cinemas and theaters and the subsidization of empty seats. Discussions have been entered in order for the proposed subsidies to be fair and cover the needs of the owners, producers and artists.
Regarding the new public health protocols, Mendoni said that they will be announced as soon as the joint government decision is issued on Monday, at which time all measures will be described in detail.
Among the new measures will be the mandatory use of masks, the new protocols for the entry and exit of audiences in big theaters, appropriate ventilation, electronic ticket systems and the suspension of intermissions in movies and plays.
