Greece Warns Europe of Turkey's Serious Escalation of Tensions After New Provocations

On Monday, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis spoke again with European Council President Charles Michel about Turkey’s most recent provocative acts in the region, according to reports in the Greek press.
Turkey’s latest illegal maritime research expedition for energy resources in Greece’s waters, the newest in a long line of such missions in recent months, was a major topic of discussion.
This act is another serious provocation on the part of Turkey, one which EU leaders decided could warrant serious action, such as sanctions, in the last Special European Council Meeting in Brussels in early October.
As reported in Greek media, Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis intends to introduce the matter at the next meeting of the European Council, which will take place next week.
In reference to the research mission, as well as the re-opening of a contested area of occupied Cyprus, an act which goes against a number of UN treaties and resolutions, Greece’s Deputy Minister Stelios Petsas stated that Turkey was “unreliable” in a recent press briefing.
Petsas highlighted Turkey’s seemingly receptive response to the conclusions drawn at the meeting of the European Council early this month, which promised to support EU member states Greece and Cyprus against acts of aggression from the country.
He noted that, although some members of the EU were optimistic about de-escalation after the meeting in Brussels, Turkey was apparently not serious about undertaking any such efforts, explicitly violating the terms that had just been set by the EU.
The country’s response to Turkey’s escalations will come in the following days, according to Petsas.
