A 90-year-old grandmother, whose eviction from her home and subsequent homelessness left Greeks outraged, has found a new home.
The grandmother, who lived with her 25-year-old grandson and their dog, could no longer afford to pay the rent for her home after her grandson couldn’t find work due to the pandemic.
After her back rent reached 1,200 euros (around 1,400 dollars), the woman, her grandson, and her dog were locked out of their home, located in the Athenian suburb of Agios Dimitrios by a bailiff.
They were not allowed to take their possessions with them, and the grandmother had to leave her home wearing a robe.
Neighbors were heartbroken by the tragic scene, and they contacted the organization Doctors of the World (Médecins du Monde Greece) to secure housing for the group, now homeless.
Doctors of the World found a place to stay for the woman and her grandson, but the dog could not be housed with them.
Unwilling to abandon their beloved pet, the woman and her grandson preferred to sleep on the street with their dog until they could find a safe place for it to stay.
They were on the streets for four long days.
The Greek public was moved by the story, and the woman was flooded with requests to help from people all over Athens.
One generous citizen offered the group a single-family home in the same suburb where their previous residence was located, Agios Dimitrios.
They are not requesting any rent from the woman, and Doctors of the World will pay for the home’s renovation and all of the bills.
The grandmother and her grandson are overjoyed at the offer, and the fact that it has a  garden that the dog can explore.
Many other people offered homes to the grandmother, but she wanted to remain in her neighborhood, where she has lived for many years.
