In anticipation of the bicentennial of the Greek War of Independence in 2021, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with 114 mayors on Friday.
This was a part of the “Greece 2021” initiative and served as an opportunity to brainstorm about projects that could help serve communities around the country in the long term.
In the meeting, which took place via teleconference, Mitsotakis and local leaders discussed challenges surrounding the environment, infrastructure, and technology, as well as forward-thinking initiatives to address these topics.
The “Greece 2021” project, lead by Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalakis, received over 300 proposals from over 100 Greek regions for projects addressing the environment and clean energy, innovative public transportation, and cutting-edge digital museums.
Work on 102 of the over 300 project proposals can begin immediately and is worth around 36 million euros (over 42.6 million dollars). “Greece 2021” initial budget is 50 million euros (over 59.3 million dollars).
In addition to discussing the “Greece 2021” project, Prime Minister Mitsotakis also assured leaders of areas highly impacted by coronavirus restrictions that they would receive financial support from the Greek government.
