A record-breaking 1,547 cases of Covid-19 were diagnosed in Greece on Wednesday as the country was celebrating its national holiday, OXI Day.
The spread of the disease continues unabated despite the lockdown imposed on four regions — Ioannina, Kastoria, Kozani and Serres — and the restrictive measures on other parts of the country.
Today’s tally is 300 more than Tuesday’s, when health authorities announced for the first time a four-digit number of coronavirus cases for the very first time since the outbreak began in the Spring. The total number of cases thus far, including all those who have recovered from the virus, is 34,299, of which 55.3% are men.

In addition to the new record number of cases, authorities also announced 10 fatalities, bringing the total number of deaths since the pandemic started in March to 603. Two hundred and twenty-eight (37.8%) were female and the rest male. The median age of all the deceased was 79 years and 96.2% had an underlying disease and/or were age 70 years and over.
There are currently 108 intubated patients in intensive care units around Greece. Their median age is 65 years. Thirty-four (31.5%) are women and the rest are men. Ninety-three percent of intubated patients suffer from an underlying disease or are aged 70 years and older. A total of 280 patients have now been discharged from ICU’s across the country.
Seventy-eight of today’s new cases are associated with known outbreaks and 52 were detected as a result of checks at the country’s gateways.
Just over four thousand of the country’s total cases (11.7%) are considered related to travel from abroad and 12,552 (36.6%) are related to an already-known case.
