U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo expressed support for Greece in the Eastern Mediterranean crisis and underscored his disapproval of Turkish actions in a letter addressed to his Greek counterpart Nikos Dendias.
The letter was sent in reply to Dendias’ letter in October, where the Greek FM described in detail the latest illegal and provocative actions by Turkey.
According to sources in the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Pompeo says that “Greece is a pillar of stability in the region,” and notes the excellent level of bilateral relations between Greece and the USA.
He adds that the U.S. “disapproves” of the ongoing Turkish explorations in areas where Greece has potential jurisdiction.
According to the same sources, he stresses that these unilateral actions only succeed in increasing the tension in the region and underscores that threats, intimidation and coercion, as well as military actions, will not resolve the tension in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Pompeo’s letter concludes by saying that the United States, like Greece, wants stability and prosperity in the Eastern Mediterranean, where relations should be developed in accordance with international law.
The Greek sources say that the letter by Pompeo was very positive and it constitutes “another confirmation of the legality of Greek positions.”
