Greek Health Minister Vasilis Kikilias stated on Wednesday evening that Greece will soon face a lockdown due to the recent spike in coronavirus cases in the country, which hit a new record today.
Speaking to interviewers on Greek television, the minister stated that the current epidemiological data show a disturbing increase in coronavirus infection rates in Greece. “We are dealing with a deadly virus,” he stated, adding “This concerns all countries. The National Health System of our country is under pressure, as in other countries and we must take measures.”
The Minister then noted that “Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis accepted the proposal of infectious disease specialists for a universal lockdown for a month nationwide.”
Asked by interviewers when the lockdown would take place, Kikilias replied that  “it will be implemented as soon as possible.”
The UK, Ireland and other European countries have imposed lockdowns recently amid the dreaded second wave of the coronavirus pandemic. Earlier reports stated that Greece’s second nationwide lockdown may begin as early as Friday.
Cases of Covid-19 spiked to an all-time high on Wednesday, as Greek health authorities reported 2,646 new cases were diagnosed in the country over the last 24 hours, which is a new  record for Greece.
The Prime Minister’s office had announced earlier in the day that the Greek leader will hold a televised press conference concerning the lockdown on Thursday.
Greece’s esteemed infectious diseases professor and the head of the government’s advisory committee on the coronavirus, Dr. Sotiris Tsiodras, will also take part in tomorrow’s press conference, which is slated to begin at noontime.
