Adding to the long list of events, celebrations and commemorations which never saw the light of day this year, it appears that 1973’s Athens Polytechnic Uprising, the anniversary of which is remembered annually in the city, will also not be commemorated in 2020.
The news comes from Greek Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrisochoidis, who spoke to the press after Friday’s Maximos Mansion meeting with State Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis, Civil Protection Minister Nikos Hardalias and other officials.
In his remarks, Chrisochoidis stated “Ιn 2020 we did not celebrate the Greek Revolution on March 25, OXI Day on October 28, we did not celebrate the Easter holidays together, or any of the things that unite us.
“The same will happen with the celebration of the Polytechnic Uprising on November 17,” he added.
Instead, he suggested that the November 17th commemoration, which recalls the sacrifices made by the students of the Athens Polytechnic against the regime of the Colonels in 1973,  serve as “an opportunity to have a broad discussion, with respect for the memory of the dead of the Polytechnic, and to give it the meaning it deserves; and when the country opens once more and this adventure is over, we will be here to once again celebrate together all these major celebrations that unite us.”
While speaking to the press, the Citizen Protection minister also had a warning for Greek citizens who are now leaving the cities before the lockdown goes into effect on Saturday morning.
Explaining that there will be strict checks at toll booths throughout the country for those who may be returning from their recent trips, he said “Everyone should know that, as of Saturday morning, only the return of those that are permanently resident in the place they are returning to will be permitted,” he said.
Chrisochoidis also urged the Greek people to avoid public gatherings during the new lockdown, adding that there will be large-scale checks in the presence of a prosecutor in order to prevent the widespread flaunting of social distancing and face mask rules which took place over the summer and into the Autumn, which appeared to have led to the massive increase in Covid-19 infections.
