The 61st Thessaloniki International Film Festival (TIFF) launched virtually on Thursday, as the opening film was projected onto a screen in an empty room in the Olympion theater due to the coronavirus.
Organizers of TIFF recognized the importance of film and filmmaking in the age of coronavirus and brought the festival to viewers despite the nation-wide lockdown in Greece.
Cinephiles can now screen the films in the festival online.
Elise Jalladeau, General Director of TIFF, was committed to putting the festival on despite the difficult circumstances, especially considering the incredible damage to the film industry that the pandemic has brought about, echoing TIFF’s motto of “cinema no matter what.”

Organizers believe that the theme of this year’s festival, “Prophecies from another world: Sci-fi and Cli-fi (1950-1990),” reflects on current realities of the pandemic, as well as climate change and rising nationalism around the world.
The festival is hosting 117 films from around the world, including 18 feature films from Greece and 21 Greek short films.
Tickets are priced at three euros (3.56 US dollars) per film, but multi-ticket packages are available. The films are only available to be viewed for 24 hours after its premiere.
TIFF will run virtually until November 15, and viewers can buy tickets at TIFF’s website.
