Greek health authorities announced on Thursday that they detected 2,018 coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours throughout the country, bringing the total number of cases since the start of the pandemic to 99,306.
They also announced that 608 patients are now intubated, which is another new record. Ninety-nine people passed away after suffering from the virus in the last 24 hours.
Earlier, the Greek government announced that it is extending the lockdown to curb the spread of Covid-19 until Monday, December 7.
The lockdown extension was expected as the number of new infections remains steadily at 2,000-3,000 cases and the death rate remains at approximately 100 every day, despite the second, stricter lockdown.
“There are some first signs of a decrease in the number of cases. If it continues at this pace, then the pressure on the National Health System will begin to ease,” government spokesman Stelios Petsas said.
