Greece’s historic museum, the Benaki, will host an online benefit auction of works of art beginning on November 30 and lasting until December 7, according to a Thursday press release.
The auction will be held as a way to support the museum’s finances, as most of Greece’s museums and cultural organizations, along with all other cultural institutions all over the world, are facing funding shortfalls in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
The works of art have been donated not only by artists who have previously exhibited their work at the museum or have collaborated with the Benaki Shop, but by the museum’s friends and supporters as well.
The auction will kick off on the date of the customary Benaki’s Annual Gala, which of course cannot be held this year due to the pandemic’s restrictions. The event will be coordinated by the Museum’s Fundraising & Development Department in collaboration with its Sustainability Volunteer Committee.
The event will begin at 10:00 AM on Monday, Nov. 30 and end at 8:00 PM on Monday, Dec. 7. It will include over 240 works of art by 138 different artists, and prices will start at just 50 euros. The complete catalogue for the exhibit is available on the Museum’s website, www.benaki.org.
In a statement, the Benaki Museum says it has remained committed to its cultural role despite the repeated closures of museums and cultural institutions across the country as a result of the pandemic.
Therefore, it continued, the online auction will bring together — albeit digitally — its friends and supporters to help sustain its mission and its programs, “in the same way it has so far remained accessible online for the public, and in the same spirit by which its employees have continued their scientific and educational work.”
