A record-breaking 613 Covid-19 patients are currently intubated in Greece on Wednesday, as intensive care units around the country find themselves operating at near capacity. A total of 2,186 new coronavirus cases were diagnosed in Greece over the last 24-hour-period, and 89 people with the virus passed away.
Greece has been under a strict national lockdown since early November. While the country was originally meant to reopen on December 1, Greece’s infection rates have not reduced at the pace required to safely end the lockdown, according to health officials, and the anti-virus measures have been extended into December.
In total, 109,655 cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in Greece since the beginning of the pandemic, including all those who have recovered from the virus. Of this total, 4,949 are associated with foreign travel and 29,023 with contact with a known case.
Of the 613 intubated patients, 76.2% are over the age of 70 or suffer from preexisting conditions. Their median age is 65, and 175 of the patients are female. A total of 611 patients have been discharged from ICUs around the country.
The 89 new deaths recorded on Wednesday bring the total number of fatalities in the country to 2,606. Of all those who lost their lives after suffering with the virus, a total of 1,055 have been women.
The median age of those who passed away with Covid-19 is 80, and 96.6% of them were over the age of 70 or suffered from underlying health issues.
