Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said that the credibility of the European Union is at stake, depending on how they choose to react to the ongoing provocations from Turkey, as he arrived at the December meeting of the European Council on Thursday.

“Here, the stake is very clear, very clear: The credibility of the European Union,” Mitsotakis said.

The Greek PM also released a tweet Thursday echoing his previous statement, in which he wrote: “On the issue of the Eastern Mediterranean what is at stake is very simple. It is the credibility of the European Union.

“We agreed in October that, should Turkey continue its provocative behavior, there will be consequences,” he expressed.

As noted by the Greek PM, during the last European Council meeting in October, it was decided that the imposition of sanctions on Turkey would be necessary if the country continued to provoke its neighbors Greece and Cyprus with acts of aggression.

Since then, Turkey has repeatedly fomented tensions with EU member states Greece and Cyprus by conducting illegal oil and gas exploration missions in Greek and Cypriot waters.

At that meeting, European leaders agreed that they would make a decision regarding sanctions at the December meeting of the European Council, which starts on Thursday.
