The Municipality of Athens illuminated the Christmas tree in Syntagma Square on Monday evening which this year is dedicated to the heroes who have been on the frontlines for Athens this holiday season and every day of the year.
The lighting of the tree was accompanied by a short documentary film that tells an Athenian Christmas story about the “real heroes” of the Greek capital.
The protagonist of the film is electric engineer Dionysis Nikolaou, the oldest employee of the Athens Municipality.
Born and raised in the Athenian neighborhood of Sepolia, he continues to live in the same house with his wife and son.
After school he started working in the electricity department of the Municipality and he learned the secrets of every corner of the ancient city.
He worked in several departments throughout his career. Today he chooses to work mainly at night, in order to leave the morning shifts to his younger colleagues.
Nikolaou was the man in charge of the lighting of Syntagma Square itself for the Christmas season.
