Greek PM Urges Health Care Workers to Be Vaccinated

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis urged health workers to receive the coronavirus vaccination during a tour of hospitals in northern Greece on Wednesday.
The PM’s appeal comes after polls and anecdotal evidence point to a reluctance by large numbers of the country’s first respondents to become inoculated. According to a recent poll by Pulse among health professionals, 29 percent of respondents are against the vaccination, while 15 percent say that they would “never” take the vaccine.
Addressing staff at the Edessa Hospital, Mitsotakis said that health workers should “give a good example to those who still hesitate.”
He added that the vaccine is now part of the “arsenal” in the battle against the coronavirus but everyone must continue to be cautious, especially over the Christmas holidays, in order to avoid a fresh surge of the pandemic.
“I came to thank you for your great efforts. I want you to know that you have my unconditional support in your struggle,” Mitsotakis said, addressing the board and the hospital’s employees.
The PM also referred to the epidemiological data showing a welcome reduction in new Covid-19 cases in northern Greece.

Earlier on Wednesday, the head of the National Organization for Public Health (EODY), Panagiotis Arkoumaneas, said he expected mass inoculations of the general population in Greece to begin in February.
Speaking on Skai radio, Arkoumaneas said that the coronavirus vaccination program should be complete by the summer.
The digital platform emvolio.gov.gr, through which citizens will be informed about the date and location for their vaccination against Covid-19, was formally activated on Tuesday, signaling the beginning of the national vaccination campaign.
