Vaccination of the general population against the coronavirus — starting with those aged 85 or over — will begin on January 20, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Tuesday.
At a meeting he chaired at the headquarters of the Civil Protection Secretariat, he said that the online platform for the electronic booking of inoculation appointments will open to public access on January 11.
Mitsotakis added that it is “imperative for all citizens to register for paperless electronic prescriptions, as this will allow them to receive electronic notifications for their appointments.”
Some 5,000 citizens are currently being vaccinated every day, he noted, and “if this is kept up, it will help ensure that the scheduling of vaccinations is met successfully.”
Until Tuesday evening some 16,365 Greek citizens had been vaccinated, while the current reserve of coronavirus vaccinations numbers 150,850 doses.
On Monday, Greek authorities announced that vaccinations will reach a minimum of 220,000 citizens by the end of January.
Electronic platform
The electronic platform emvolio.gov.gr is set to open next week, helping citizens get in line for the coronavirus vaccination when their turn comes.
The platform, which opens on Monday, is designed to serve as a registry for citizens who have not signed up for paperless prescriptions on the central Gov.gr website, a process that will, with time, become mandatory for all individuals insured with a Greek healthcare fund.
In the event that you are unable to register on either platform – both of which are available in Greek only and require an AMKA social security number and Taxisnet codes – ask for help at your nearest Citizens’ Service Center (KEP) or local pharmacy.
Jump in new cases
Mitsotakis’ announcement came on a day when the number of Covid-19 cases saw a huge jump in Greece.
Health authorities diagnosed 928 new cases across the country on Tuesday. This represents an eye-popping 501 more than the 427 cases that had been recorded in the country just one day earlier, on Monday.
A total of 40 people with the virus passed away and 405 patients are now intubated.
