A total of 510 Covid-19 cases were diagnosed in Greece on Thursday, which is 306 fewer than the 816 cases that were recorded in the country just one day earlier, on Wednesday.
Tragically, 47 people with the virus passed away in the country over the past 24 hour period, which is one fewer than those recorded yesterday.
Currently, 391 patients with Covid-19 are intubated in Greece, eight fewer than those who were intubated in the country on Wednesday.
A large portion of Thursday’s cases were diagnosed in the areas surrounding Greece’s two largest urban centers — Athens and Thessaloniki.
In Attica, home to the capital city of Athens, there were 187 cases, 60 of which were diagnosed in the center of Athens. A total of 65 new cases were recorded in Thessaloniki, Greece’s second largest city.
In total, 142,777 cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in the country since the beginning of the pandemic, including all those who have recovered from the virus.
Of this total, 5,565 are associated with foreign travel, and 42,934 are associated with contact with a known case.
Of the 391 patients intubated currently, 85.2% are over the age of 70 or suffer from preexisting conditions. Their median age is 68, and 266 of the patients are male.
A total of 911 patients have been discharged from ICUs around the country since the beginning of the pandemic.
The 47 new deaths recorded on Thursday bring the total number of fatalities in the country to 5,146. Of all those who lost their lives after suffering from the virus, a total of 3,041 have been male.
The median age of those who passed away with Covid-19 is 79, and 95.5% of them were over the age of 70 or suffered from underlying health issues.
Covid-19 cases expected to rise in Greece
The coronavirus in Greece will spread faster after the holiday season because people were more lax during the weeks of Christmas and New Year’s Day, scientists warn.
Reports from the liturgies on the feast of Epiphany across Greece on Wednesday alarmed scientists, with some wondering aloud why so many faithful ignored the Covid-19 prevention measures that were in place.
Dr. Nikolaos Kapravelos, Director of the ICU Department at Papanikolaou Hospital in Thessaloniki, shared his unsettling belief that there will be a third wave of the pandemic.
Commenting on the crowding on the Epiphany, the doctor said that the coming wave of the pandemic will cause many more infections and deaths.
“Based on what we saw on Epiphany day, with this kind of behavior, soon we will not be talking about the Thessaloniki tragedy but the country’s tragedy,” he warned.
“It is certain that we will have a third wave ahead of us and we will be mourning many victims,” the doctor stated, adding that the ICU system across the country is now overloaded.
