Constantine Passaris, a Greek-Canadian economics professor at the University of New Brunswick at Fredericton is included in the prestigious inaugural edition of “Who’s Who in Greece 2020” for his long and distinguished service to his home country.
Who’s Who in Greece 2020 includes short biographical profiles of — among other notables — Greek prime ministers and other prominent politicians, leading Greek academics and scientists, as well as Greek industrialists, shipping magnates and entrepreneurs.
Celebrated Greek poets, authors and visual artists also represent the cultural realm in Who’s Who every year.
“My inclusion in this elite publication is a distinct honor and a unique recognition,” Passaris states. He says this is particularly true since he has not even been a resident of Greece since 1968.
“At that time,” he recalls, “I left Greece to pursue graduate studies in Canada. In the subsequent years, I have been a permanent resident of Canada and became a naturalized Canadian citizen. However, I have also maintained close ties with my homeland on many levels.”
An official statement from the University of New Brunswick commemorating Passaris’ inclusion in the distinguished list notes that Passaris has advised several Greek governments and provided advice on international trade issues to the Canadian Embassy in Greece.
In addition, he was invited by the Greek Ministry of Education’s Quality Assurance and Accreditation Agency to chair many external evaluation committees and external accreditation panels which conducted quality reviews and accreditation assessments for a large number of Greek universities.
These reports were subsequently submitted to the European Union.
Visiting professor at International Writer’s Center in Rhodes
As a noted expert in many fields, Passaris has delivered keynote addresses and academic papers at international conferences organized by Greek universities and Greek government institutions and has authored numerous opinion and editorial articles for Greek newspapers and electronic media.
He has written extensively on Greece’s many contributions to the world, including the brilliance of Ancient Greek engineering, as seen through the Antikythera Mechanism, which is often referred to as the world’s first computer.
He recently wrote about Greece’s impressive response to the pandemic in a story published in May of 2020.
In addition, the Greek-Canadian has served for several years as a visiting professor at the International Writer’s Center in Rhodes, Greece. Passaris has also been featured in the Canadian version of Who’s Who since 2003.
The professor of economics is also one of only a handful of international recipients to receive the prestigious Greece-based Onassis Foundation Fellowship — twice. The recipients of this award are selected by an international competition from leading academics and scholars who have achieved an international reputation through their publications.
