Scottish musician Sophie Xeon, better known as ”Sophie” died at the age of 34 in Athens, Greece in the early hours of Saturday.
The Grammy-nominated record producer, singer, songwriter, and DJ tragically lost her life following a terrible accident in her apartment in Athens, where she used to live.
”Tragically, our beautiful Sophie passed away this morning after a terrible accident,” UK label Transgressive said in a statement on Saturday.
”True to her spirituality she had climbed up to watch the full moon and accidentally slipped and fell,” the statement noted.
An investigation has been launched by the Greek police to identify the exact reasons for this accident. However, as the Associated Press reported, sources from the police force in Athens do believe that this was a genuine accident, and no foul play is suspected.
Who Was Sophie Xeon
Sophie was born on 17 September 1986 in Glasgow, Scotland, in the United Kingdom.
Her adult music career began with the ”Motherland” music band.
She performed alongside Sabine Gottfried, Matthew Lutz-Kinoy, and Marcella Dvsi. She later collaborated with bandmate Matthew Lutz-Kinoy on a series of performance works.
Sophie, who initially remained anonymous and later came out as a trans woman, came to prominence with singles such as “Bipp” in 2013 and “Lemonade” in 2014.
Sophie’s debut album Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides followed in 2018, earning a nomination for the Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Album.
Following her tragic accidental death in 2021, Pitchfork called Sophie “the influential British producer who molded electronic music into bracingly original avant-garde pop.”
Her Identity
Sophie was described by her fans as a reclusive figure, and remained anonymous for some time, concealing her identity in interviews by masking her voice or covering parts of her body
Early in Sophie’s career, her real-life identity was the subject of press speculation.
Before coming out as a trans woman, there were accusations that she was performing “feminine appropriation”, on the assumption that Sophie was a man using a female stage name.
The music video for “It’s Okay to Cry”, released in October 2017, was the first time Sophie’s voice and image appeared in public, with Sophie being nude from the bust-up against a backdrop of white clouds and blue sky.
This was widely interpreted by the press as a coming-out announcement of a trans woman.
Sophie confirmed her trans identity in subsequent interviews, becoming an idol for the LGBTQ+ community and the broader British music industry.
